Rachel: I was prompted this morning by a phone call to check out Grantham Matters as there are some photos of Dad on there, I am 66 now and known David most of my grown up years starting at Grantham Road Services workshops when I was 14 in 1968. Colas and GRS had quite a good working relationship & I believe the GRS new workshops was modeled on Colas’s newly built workshops of the day. Or maybe the other way around? So I came across David then of course, I then I went to work for Band B Garages on Spittlegate level and there again Colas was one of B and B Garages clients & worked with some of Dads ex colleges, Tony Greg and Vic Gunnet , plus we often borrowed special tools off Colas workshops and GRS & visa versa. Good days we were all like a big family to be honest I know that seems a bit ‘cheesy’ nowadays but true. In 1984 I then got out of the ‘spannering’ I was not the best at it! So I joined Colas’ My Brother-in law Brian Phillips got me introduced to the job as a tipper driver’ So definitely knew & worked with ‘Dad for over 30 years! I now live in North Essex & not really in touch with Grantham very much, I often think about him and other old mates! David was a bit special in respect of he liked his own company but was brilliant company to be in , I dont think he ever got really close to anyone but was very good at his job and worked hard, and I can imagine Davids comments if he reads this! Great bloke! Very very funny bloke’ but one on his own and he enjoyed that. I ended up the ladder a little at Colas and David I and others was part of a department that is still quite a specialised process, One of my jobs was running contracts on the Isle of Man’ for High friction surfacing (Shellgrip) I would have two or three visits a year checking out the new sites to be treated and looking at the seasons before work in case of any failing areas, & supervising the crews when the work commenced’ On some of my solo visits checking sites I would take someone with me & some materials to do any real small areas (Hand patching) I took David sometimes and we used to have a real good time together. I also worked with him on many sites with crews in the UK and all of its Islands and trips into France and Italy. Great days and I miss them lots. I think the photos also are very good. I do hope David is OK Rachel. Seriously one of Granthams true charterers. I never have met anyone so unique’ and I would definitely not be on my own with that comment ,as many that no him and have lived away for months at a time with him. Great times great blokes including some of Colas’s very clever management , experts in their and our type of processes that knew our jobs and knew us very well and David would agree with that as well. Its not the easiest keeping lads in none tourist areas of Italy and France running programmes for months’ and of course the language barriers that we had to learn in “Survival” mode! They was all great and David was an excellent team member. So Rachel wish him well please from Yoey. haha ‘ he will read this and say or go Idiot, or? well I cannot put in print what I imagine “Snowy” will say! then he will laugh. Thank you Grantham Matters for putting these photos in and Rachel for sending them to this site. Tony Yeomans (Yoey) PS remember me to him please.

Dear Rachel – you may not remember me but I am your cousin Penny from London. I remember your dad very well along with his white blond hair. From memory he was also known as Blondie long before Debbie Harry. I can remember him washing his hair in the kitchen sink before he went out in the evenings! Your dad had a pet goose for a while that used to travel in his Land Rover with him when he went to work. From memory he rescued her when he was out working one day, although my memory may be a bit hazy on that.
The goose lived with the chickens at the end of 31 Gorse Rise and was devoted to your dad. Please remember me to your mum and dad. Best wishes. Penny.
