Work on a new zebra crossing near St Anne’s Primary School, Harrowby Road, begins today.
Construction is expected to last two weeks, during which two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place.
A one day road closure will be required during that period to enable some carriageway re-surfacing to take place – residents and motorists will be advised of the date nearer the time.
A diversion route for the one day closure will be Bridge End Road (A52), London Road (A52) and Avenue Road.
Parents have been campaigning for a crossing on Harrowby Road as they find the road difficult to cross due to reduced visibility caused by parked cars, and being on the brow of a hill.
Coun Richard Davies, Executive Member for Highways and Transportation said: “The new zebra crossing will make it much safer for parents and children to cross this busy road, and get to school.
“It has taken a lot of careful planning to reach this stage and we’re aiming for the crossing to be in place in time for the next school term.”
A 20mph advisory speed limit will be introduced in the vicinity of the crossing, and signing and road markings will also be enhanced.
The zebra crossing beacon will be fitted with a screen to minimise light pollution and road surfacing will be improved.
