Watergate – before the bulldozers

February 10, 2019 by Grantham Matters 3 Comments

Looking south in 1959 from Yvonne Parker. Buildings on the left replaced by Watergate House
Watergate, closed for business. This was taken just prior to the demolition of the east side of Watergate, my grandfather’s shop is just visible on the extreme right. Some of these businesses re-located but many, like my Grandfather, did not. I lived here for the first five years of my life but spent a lot of time here even after I moved to Belton Lane. from Yvonne Parker

Come to think of it, at the risk of moaning there is very little left of the original town.

Today you have faceless, soulless, heartless, thoughtless, politicos and planners who hide behind reams of law, and by-laws, who have an army of legal wafflers to assist in their single minded plans of destroying a town of what THEY think is best for everyone in the guise of THE BIG PLAN,

Have they ever in their aspirations of grandeur of all this ever once thought of the populace of Grantham and how all this sudden and often unwarranted change will affect individuals. Housing being thrown up, but what about the infrastructure to support all this housing, the doctors can’t cope, the hospital is a shadow of its former self, schools will be at breaking point, the roads certainly can’t cope, it this all part of THE BIG PLAN?

It is known that politicians are arrogant self seeking preening individuals and the local mandarins are making as big a mess of the town as their paymasters in London are making of the country.

Still Grantham will have a new cinama, “ Bread and circuses “
