As the brand-new 2019-20 season draws ever closer, publication of fixtures lists for all three senior Kesteven Rugby Club teams – Men’s 1st and 2nd, and Ladies – are focusing hearts and minds as pre-season preparations continue.
Kesteven Ladies will be Kesteven Rugby Club’s first senior team to open their 2019-20 season account. In an historic match for the Club, the side will make their Women’s NC 2 North (East) league debut against league stalwarts, and local rivals, Sleaford Ladies away on Sunday 8 September.
The Black Army Ladies’ first league match promises to be a gripping derby to open the season. This inaugural league match is scheduled exactly a year after Kesteven Ladies’ first-ever competitive game in the Cockburn Lucas 4 Women-sponsored shirt – also against Sleaford Ladies.
Says Kesteven’s Head Forwards Coach, Nathan Smith, who refereed that day: “Officiating at Kesteven Ladies’ first match last September was one of the proudest moments of my career. Kesteven Ladies lost that encounter, but rugby is not all about winning. The progress everyone has made over the last 12 months and their team spirit have been impressive.
“The squad is definitely planning that all the hard work they and the coaching team have put in over the past 12 months will pay off in a competitive match and worthy first league appearance. Win or lose, we know that 8th September will be a big cause for celebration, and another emotional special day for us all at Kesteven Rugby Club.”
Kesteven Rugby Club Men’s campaigns kick off on 14 September
In what is sure to be another enthralling curtain-raiser to 2019-20, Kesteven Men’s 1st XV opener takes them to Mansfield in an away game on Saturday 14 September.
Pulling on their Price Whiting Hodgson Financial Planning-sponsored shirts, the Men’s 1st XV will seek to assert dominance over the Nottinghamshire side, who ended last season ninth in the league – four places behind Kesteven’s fifth.
League rugby union returns to Kesteven Rugby Club’s Woodnook ground for the first time in the 2019-20 season the next day, when Kesteven Ladies take on Scunthorpe Ladies on Sunday 15 September. Kesteven Ladies then face Driffield Ladies away on Sunday 22 September, coinciding with the start of the home nations’ Rugby World Cup campaigns in Japan.
On Saturday 28September, Kesteven Men’s 1st XV face a newly promoted Mellish side at their first home league game of the season at Woodnook. Again, Ks will look to carry on the momentum from an inspired run of form that closed out 2018-19.
For Kesteven Men’s 2nd XV, the season officially kicks off away to Bingham 1sts on Saturday 28September. Setting out its stall for the season as 2018-19 league winners, Kesteven Men’s 2nd XV then hosts Notts Moderns 2nd XV at Woodnook the following Saturday, 5 October. Here the 2nds will be looking to repeat their resounding 63-7 win against the side in their last match of the season.
One Club, One Family, One Fantastic Journey
Commenting on the newly announced calendar of fixtures, Kesteven Rugby Club’s Director of Rugby, Fereti ‘Freddie’ Tuilagi, said: “All Kesteven Rugby Club’s senior teams are working hard and training together to face the challenges of the coming season. The mindset is very positive.
“Kesteven’s 2nds won their league in 2018-19. Kesteven 1sts also had a great run of unbeaten form to end the season, with both teams clearly really enjoying their rugby.
“For Kesteven Ladies, it’s all to play for as they step up this season from an RFU development side to become a league squad.”
Alongside the growing contingents of senior men’s and women’s squad players, and the dedicated coaches who support all age groups – including Kesteven’s Minis, Junior Girls and Boys, and Colts – more people across a huge range of age and experience across Grantham are enjoying the reality of the Black Army’s rallying cry “One Club, One Family, One Fantastic Journey”, and getting involved in activities at their local rugby club.
Touch Rugby takes off at Kesteven Rugby Club
Non-contact Touch Rugby is now a permanent, year-round and very popular week-night feature on Kesteven’s Woodnook pitches. Geared for everyone of any ability, size or fitness level aged 11 and upwards, Touch Rugby is successfully attracting people of every age and entire families – from complete rugby novices to full-contact veterans – who play in short matches in the spirit of the game with its teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sporting ethos.
Says Graeme Roberts, who organises the friendly sessions at Kesteven each Wednesday from 6.30pm. “Touch Rugby is taking off in a big way at Kesteven Rugby Club. It is for everyone, not just members. Touch Rugby is ideal for anyone looking to get exercise in or looking to take up a non-contact sport.”
Members of Kesteven Rugby Club’s age-banded junior teams are among those relishing their mid-week Touch Rugby sessions. Many – and often their parents too – are seeing it as a fun and friendly opportunity to burn off excess energy, sharpen their skills further and maintain fitness before their weekly Sunday training starts at the end of August.
Watch the Rugby World Cup at Woodnook
Says Angus Shaw, President of Kesteven Rugby Club: “The Rugby World Cup in Japan coincides with the start of the Senior teams’ league campaigns. But it’s not just the home nations going places! Closer to home, Woodnook, the home of Kesteven Rugby, is going to be even more buzzing with fantastic rugby from all of Grantham’s teams – Minis, Junior Girls and Boys, Colts and Seniors – all hopefully inspired by great World Cup performances.
“We are in exciting times at Kesteven Rugby Club. These pre-season Senior league announcements are just the beginning. I invite everyone to come and see and consider joining our rugby family on our journey, either as a player or supporter – everyone will be made very welcome! It would be fantastic to see match-day support up at Woodnook continue to grow.
“Kesteven Rugby’s family – players, supporters and sponsors – cannot wait to start our 2019-20 journey. Most important is that we have fun on the way. Watch this space for more information on Rugby World Cup-related events for all at Kesteven Rugby Club!”
