Agnes Hodgkins (1927-1955)
BORN in Liverpool, Agnes was a speedway racer who met her husband-to-be J H Hodgkins from Sewstern at the Long Eaton track in 1950.
The couple bought a garage and workshops at 24 Watergate.
They continued to race and when stock-car racing was introduced to the UK in 1954, the couple eagerly took up the sport.
But in a race at Coventry, she misjudged a corner, crashed into the barrier and died of multiple injuries.
