Grantham rock musicians in protest march

YOUNGSTERS were joined by councillors on a march through town in 1961. They were protesting at the George Hotel management’s decision to try to get rock ‘n’ roll dances banned at the Westgate Hall. 400 led a silent protest. The procession is seen in Elmer Street South. Many of the buildings have since been demolished.

ROCK ‘n’ roll fans were joined by councillors on a march through town in 1961. They were protesting at the George Hotel management’s decision to try to get dances banned at the Westgate Hall. 400 led a silent protest. Led by Couns John Wallwork, Ald Sarah Barnes (centre) and Coun Elsie Davies, the procession have reached Elmer Street South. The building on the left was later demolished to make way for the JobCentre.
