PRIME Minister Harold Macmillan visited Grantham in 1959 to support local Conservative MP Joe Godber. The huge crowd blocked Wide Westgate. Across the road was the Blue Man, far left, with traffic coming out of Welby Street. Johnson and Basker was an off-licence, while Manterfield was a cobbler.
In 1984 BMARCo Training School were asked ,in conjunction with Grantham College, to build a 4 x model of Sir Isaac Newton’s telescope as a centre piece for the new Isaac Newton Shopping Centre which was achieved in collaboration with the Science Museum of London with the final painting, polishing and final assembly on 15 th March 1984.In total 12 apprentices from BMARCo. ,6 from Aveling-Barford and 1 from Grantham Electrical were responsible for this outstanding and unique piece.It went on display as promised and has never been seen since.Where is it now?Vaughan“This 4X scale model of Isaac Newton’s telescope was constructed in 1984 by 12 apprentices of BMARCo., Grantham Electrical and 6 apprentices from Aveling-Barford in conjunction with Grantham College.It was presented to Morrisons for display at the Isaac Newton Centre but where is it now? It’s a Female, ie only armed with machine guns, Mark IV Tank given to the town in 1919 as a thank-you for all the money raised for war funds during the war by the town. It was on a concrete plinth in what became Wyndham Park
. It was sold off for scrap in the late 1920s for £26.50p.
There is only one of these presentation tanks left in the country and that’s in Ashford in Kent.

GRANTHAM students taking part in what was then their annual rag week in October 1969. The event included kidnapping the town’s Tory MP Joe Godber, which raised only £7.55 ransom. This was one of only four floats that year, Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School depicting the Isle of Wight Folk Festival. A COLLISION between a Hillman and this Rover gives an excellent view of Avenue Road in 1959.Welham Street with Pidcock’s maltings in background in 1959The driver of this precariously balanced Wolsey Hornet was unhurt following a collision on the corner of Welham Street and Avenue Road in 1959. In the background is Pidcocks Maltings which was demolished in 1973.
