Grantham has the distinction of being the first place in UK to haul a Poll Tax protestor before the courts.
It happened in 1990 and these people were object to the new system to replace the rates, whereby millionaires and unemployed would pay the same.
It never caught on and was replaced in turn by the present community charge.
These protests were outside the Conservative offices in St Catherine’s Road, whenDoulas Hogg was the sitting MP. They moved the offices to Bourne soon afterwards.
