The gatehouse of the Hill View Workhouse, Dysart Road (near to where Antony Smith’s dental surgery is now). It was later used as a maternity hospital.

When the Second World War came to an end, BMARCo managing director Denis Kendall was looking for something to replace his munitions making business.
He came up with three ideas, the Kendall car, the Kendall motorcycle and the Kendall tractor.
In the event, none of them took off, but the prototypes are still around in the hands of collectors.
The nearest it got, was Steelweld, on the same site some years later, made welding plants for car makers

A Fire at Yellow Cabs offices on London Road in 1996 destroyed the entire building.
Originally part of Mowbray’s Brewery, it had also been the offices of North Road Garages, with the valet department on the ground floor.
It is now the site of Topps Tiles/JYSK
