Andrew Borkertas (1991-2008)
Born and brought up in the Swinstead area, Andrew was keen on football and had played for Grantham Town’s junder-14 side.
The family moved to town and he became a pupil at Grantham Church High School.
He joined the Army in December 2007 and began his training at Catterick, North Yorkshire.
He was two weeks from his passing out parade and was due to join the 2nd Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment, when he died following an accident.
During a training exercise Pte Andrew Borkertas, 17, fell into the swollen Risedale Beck, Hipswell Moor, near Catterick Garrison, during a training exercise.
His body was found the following day after an intensive search by police, RAF and International Rescue Corps.
Andrew’s commanding officer, Lt Col Mike Thornton, said: “He was a dedicated young man with a bright future.”
His funeral with full military honours was held at St Wulfram’s Church, Grantham.
