Grantham Rivercare completed another successful clean up on Saturday. It was a glorious spring day when a record number of twenty two volunteers set about cleaning up the River Witham between Bridge End Road and Wyndham Park.
Not only was it a record number of volunteers but also the least amount of rubbish ever collected. That having been said, the haul weighed in at 69.9kg and included fourteen bags of bottles, cans and plastic wrappers, a clothes drier and a bike. Rivercare have been cleaning up the river for the past fourteen years and so it was most encouraging to have less to collect. Hopefully at long last people are showing more respect for the river and surroundings, and making more of an effort to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.
Amongst the volunteers on this occasion were two Police Community Support Officers and two from the Environment Agency. With the water level being so high we also had the help of Gary in his canoe who was able to reach parts the others could not. He also gave us a demonstration of how to use a throw line.
So well done and thanks to all those who played a part on the day. Our next clean up will be on Saturday 9th June.
